A new addition picked up from a Cambodian lady who owns a unique place. We really didn't know what we had other than an herb because she only knew the Asian name. Her passion for her plants showed. It is really taking off & goes with a number of other things growing here. Love the lemon flavor. Will be adding more
A lot of people can get confused when talking about curry. First you have the plant not used in cooking that you will see at some garden centers that is not the culinary herb. There is also the confusion that Curry sauce is made from one plant but Curry Sauce is a blend of spices and herbs and there are multiple types of sauce. Curry Leaf Tree, native to India and surrounding areas in Asia, is an herb with a long history of medicinal and culinary uses.

Curry leaves are glossy, pointy, almond-shaped pinnate leaves with a complex citrus flavor often described as reminiscent of lemongrass, anise, and asafetida—but none of these comparisons do it justice. You have to taste and smell a curry leaf to grasp its essence.
The name kariveppilai itself says the kari means curry, veppu means neem and ilai means leaf. Hence the literal translation of curry leaves of the Tamil name means “leaf that is used to make curry”. These leaves are almost used or added in almost all dishes to give a nice aroma to the dish.

One failed before. It was planted outside while it was still to young, much smaller than this one, for a region that it is borderline hardy in. This one may stay inside or at least come in during the winter. More to come.

The leaves of this plant are used more often than the lime. Which if used is zested. Kaffir is offensive term from what I found stated Muslims called nonbelievers in parts of Africa so more calling it a Makrut Lime. Here both names are used so everyone knows they are the same plant because a lot of people are still unaware.
Need to check again, hand killed some scale bugs that were on the new growth. Otherwise has done fine

I love citrus flavors in desserts. (Like these meyer lemon ginger mousses or this strawberry pavlova with mezcal and lime or this not-quite-citrus-but-similar-in-spirit passion fruit tart.)
