Some adventures are made on the same roads you have been down your whole life. They could be 20 mins away or a day. Adventures will not only be memories that are made but history & things we learn. This is road starts many adventures. Turn right & eventually arrive at the coast, left mountain after mountain
Well no new adventures. There were a couple workshops & a coastal fishing trip or Coastal Flooding Trip that had some great eating but a NorEaster had all the piers, lots of places, & several roads closed. The adventure was the weather & getting sand blasted on the beach.
This and Thanksgiving are our favorite Holidays. We know apple butter making isn't a holiday yet but the with the family, friends, and the newcomers who become friends. Add in the spread of food and desserts that stretches across several countertops, a stove and 2 tables, it is a Holiday on the "Bend". The farm is situated on a sharp bend in the river that carves through a community built around agriculture. The kettle dates back generations to when there were two small orchards on the farm. One an apple containing about 40 trees of red delicious, yellow delicious, and a couple other varieties I will get the name of. The other was a peach orchard.
Going to take a lot of biscuits to empty them jars
Still developing the site so geology might get its own section because of it importance to plants, we hike to see geological features, and will tour mines. For now it is here since several trips were made to Ogdensburg, NJ. These were not really planned and were done to display things we run across on rides or trips exploring geology and nature. They turn out like this over time. It is interesting to see minerals in their natural state and what they are found with, then see them processed, and finally what it becomes. Kind of like growing plants because of their history and seeing what you can do with them.
The Nickel Copper Ore from the Big Nickel was actually passed down from my Grandparents on my Dad's side. I guess it runs in the family and is an excuse to add to what they started. The above left are samples of rock with the minerals to make zinc and a drill bit head from the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in NJ. A processors bar of zinc bar is behind that with a vintage zinc lid my Dad had. Sterling Hill Mine is a place we have visited several times. Mainly for Super Dig. They have a great set up and if you are into geology you should try and make a trip. The middle pic is copper. The greenish bar was left by glaciers as they retreated in Michigan. The bright shiny copper in rock is referred to as native copper and comes from the upper peninsula of Michigan. The bar is just a 10 ounce bar. Above right is bauxite up front. It is the main rock used in making aluminum, a section of aluminum rod is behind it and not sure what the aluminum fin thing with the copper center came from. Coal and a rock containing Iron ore are behind them, they built our society. Isn't interesting that Coal in its long history is one of the faces of global air pollution yet charcoal filters where and still are used to keep the water clean and fish alive in aquariums, in vacuum cleaners, and in air purifiers. Today coconut husk has become the preferred source of charcoal. Not promoting any type of environmental policy, just find it ironic. Will add some of the Sterling Hill mine trip pictures
Where the zinc minerals and bit came from. Known as the Fluorescent Mineral Capital of the world. Great Museum, Staff and, Volunteers. A lot of them who were actual miners or in the industry. Their Super Dig events are great way to spend a day outside, dig all kinds minerals, get a mine tour, learn some history, and eat some miners' pasties (Cornish meat pies, a traditional miner's lunch).
